Masking Tape

A conformable paper backing for masking. Balance reliable holding with clean removal from the intended surface.

THE APPLICATION

Balance tack.
Build lasting adhesion.

A self-adhesive article brings a backing, an adhesive layer and an end-use surface together. The right balance of initial tack, adhesion and internal strength depends on the complete construction and the conditions in which it will be used.

  • Backing, release liner and end-use surface
  • Required tack and peel behaviour
  • Coating method and operating conditions
  • Heat and moisture exposure in use

THREE BACKINGS / THREE BONDING BRIEFS

Made for the job.
From masking to sealing.

Paper backingAdhesive layer
01

Masking Tape

Hold accurately. Remove cleanly.

Creped paper helps a masking tape follow gentle curves and tear by hand. The adhesive needs to hold the edge in place during the intended masking operation.

Construction & evaluation
The construction
Paper backing, adhesive and a controlled unwind surface.
What matters
Edge definition, conformability, dwell time and residue-free removal on the intended substrate.
Evaluate together
Peel behaviour after use, adhesive transfer and compatibility with the actual coating or drying cycle.
BOPP filmAdhesive layer
02

BOPP Tape

A thin film. A secure closure.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene film provides a lightweight backing for carton-sealing tapes. Synthetic-rubber pressure-sensitive adhesives are one established option for rapid initial adhesion.

Construction & evaluation
The construction
BOPP film and PSA, with surface preparation and unwind behaviour matched to the coating process.
What matters
Initial grab, holding power and dependable contact with the actual carton surface.
Evaluate together
Manual or automatic dispensing, flap spring-back, storage conditions and variation in paperboard.
Reinforced clothAdhesive layer
03

Duct Tape

Reinforced backing. Flexible contact.

A typical duct tape combines a polyethylene-coated cloth backing with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The cloth reinforces the tape while allowing practical handling and hand tearing.

Construction & evaluation
The construction
Protective outer film, reinforcing fabric and adhesive coating.
What matters
Conformability, initial contact on uneven surfaces and resistance to movement under load.
Evaluate together
Peel and shear behaviour, backing strength and the moisture or temperature exposure expected in use.

Tape names describe constructions, not a single adhesive chemistry. OYTITHERM hotmelt PSA selection is based on the backing, converting line and intended use.

LABELS / FROM FACTORY TO DELIVERY

Different surfaces.
Different demands.

A label must stay in place and keep its information readable through the journey it was designed for.

Tyre with a partially peeled tread label revealing the adhesive interface

TYRE LABELS

Grip a challenging surface.

Curved tread, rough rubber and migrating rubber constituents make tyre labelling demanding. Specialised high-tack adhesives and suitable barrier facestocks address different parts of this challenge.

  • Contact and edge lift on the actual tread geometry
  • Resistance to staining through the face material
  • Adhesive edge bleed during converting and storage
  • Appearance and adhesion after the intended handling cycle

Assess the whole label construction on representative tyres, including the intended storage conditions.

Courier parcel with a shipping label peeled at one corner to expose its layered construction

COURIER & LOGISTICS LABELS

Keep information moving.

Shipping labels bring the printed face, adhesive and release liner together. Paperboard, coated cartons and plastic mailers present different bonding surfaces.

  • Initial tack during fast print-and-apply operations
  • Reliable contact with the actual package surface
  • Readable print throughout handling and distribution
  • Suitable performance in cold or humid shipping areas

Application temperature and service temperature are different: a label applied to a cold parcel must develop contact at that temperature.

OYTITHERM / HOTMELT PSA

The balance
behind the bond.

A strong first touch is one part of performance. The adhesive also needs to suit coating, converting and the finished article.

Brief contact between adhesive and substrateBrief contact & wettingApplication surface
Principle illustrations · not measured product results

Make the first contact count.

Tack describes bond formation during brief contact. Consider the application pressure, substrate and temperature at the moment the label or tape is applied.

Discuss: initial contact and wetting on the real surface.
Tack
How readily the adhesive establishes a bond during brief contact.
Peel adhesion
The resistance when the tape or label is pulled away under defined conditions.
Shear & cohesion
The ability of the adhesive layer to resist movement and internal failure under load.
Converting behaviour
Coating uniformity, release, die-cutting and edge ooze must work with the complete construction.
